MS Teams Meeting Data

During a Microsoft Teams Meeting it is often necessary to share attachments, anything from meeting notes to diagrams and everything in between. The question of MS Teams and Data storage has been raised quite a bit recently and while the logical architecture diagrams released by Microsoft back in May of this year(https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/teams-architecture-solutions-posters) go a long way to show how the various Office 365 services behind the scenes connect, and a lot about where data is stored is self explanatory from these diagrams, one thing that isn’t obvious is when a meeting participant shares something in a meeting where is it stored?

The fact is that behind the scenes of an MS Teams meeting it is using the Microsoft Teams Chat Service, and the chat associated with your meeting is simply just a group chat. This in turn means that your shared attachments follow the protocol of the Chat service and will be stored in the Microsoft Team Chat Files folder of the user who shared the attachment.

Permissons to the file are granted for all meeting participants as part of the file sharing process.

Notable limitations of all of this include that if a user does not have a OneDrive for Business license assigned they will be unable to share files in their chats, and an organizations individual configuration will also impact on what files can be shared and to whom.
